Spring 2000 – Age 28 – PHANTOM

Spring of 2000 – Dana and my first Broadway Show….We didn’t know what to expect but it was such a great show and experience. We were instantly hooked on Broadway Shows.

In The Phantom of the Opera, a young singer, Christine, is charmed by a mysterious specter who haunts the Paris Opera house. Based on Gaston Leroux’s famous novel, the musical’s tale begins as unexplained accidents have been occurring throughout the Paris Opera, and the stuck-up diva, Carlotta, refuses to go on. Christine takes her place and is a triumph. At her opening night, she meets her childhood friend, Raoul. Alone in her dressing room, she finally meets the Phantom who has taught her to sing so beautifully. Taking her to his lair in the misty catacombs beneath the Opera House, the Phantom declares his love for Christine, but she soon learns his terrible secret. The story moves from the Phantom’s underground hideaway to the dizzying roof of the Opera House, as the Phantom and Raoul battle for Christine’s love.

Dana and I didn’t know anything about this show going into it…we had only heard that it was good. We hated it the first 15 minutes and talked about leaving but stuck with it. By the end of the show we loved it and it is probably my favorite of them all. It exemplifies my life beliefs….Love, not judging, being important in the lives of others.

October 2000 – Age 28 – Beauty and the Beast.

Beauty and the Beast is, as most fairy tales, a morality play. A handsome prince, because of his pride, is turned into a hideous beast. He lives in and enchanted castle with, among others, Lumiere the candelabra, Cogs-worth the clock, Chip the teacup and Mrs Potts. The Beast must learn to love again in order to break the spell.

Beautiful Belle’s father is imprisoned by the Beast. Belle convinces the Beast to accept her as a prisoner instead. Needless to say, the Beast falls in love, but all is not yet happy. Belle and the Beast have to work through a bit of betrayal and a flirtation with death before all live happily ever after.

Saw this with Jean Howell (My Mother) We took a limo instead of a cab to the show and afterwards we stopped and got a hot dog from a street vendor and rode the subway back. An unforgettable evening with my mom.

October 27, 2006 – Age 35 – MAMMA MIA

35th Birthday trip to NYC.

Mamma Mia! features the music of legendary Swedish singing group ABBA. The setting is a Greek island where 20 year old Sophie is due to be married. Her mother Donna, who happens to be a former star singer, is there. But Sophie’s father is not present because she is not sure of his identity. So Sophie researches her mom’s diary and chooses three former lovers as likely candidates and invites them to the wedding, thinking she will figure it out when she sees them. Donna is a bit non-plussed to be visited by the gathering of old flames.

Dana and I saw this when we went to NYC for my 35th Birthday….We got dressed up and walked to the show after a nice dinner at a steakhouse. Great show, when the show was over it was raining and we rode in a bike cab….This 19 year old kid from Russia pedaled a bike in the rain and we rode in a zipped up buggy.

October – 2006 – Age 35 – WICKED

Long before Dorothy drops in, two girls meet in the land of Oz. One, born with emerald-green skin, is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. Wicked tells the story of how these two unlikely friends grew to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch.

This fantasy-filled musical was the winner of three 2004 Tony Awards including prizes for Best Costume Design and Best Scenic Design. From real flying monkeys to a trip to the Emerald City and a soaring, modern score by Stephen Schwartz, Wicked is a true spectacle for the eyes and ears.

Didn’t think I was going to like this and the whole title threw me….I thought it was going to be some horror type show. I was so wrong and this was a very good play. We bought the CD and still listen to the songs today.
